gPhoto 0.5 Manual
=================

1. Connecting a camera
----------------------

Plug in the camera and switch it on, then start gPhoto. It connects
to the first camera libgphoto2 detects and reads the picture index.

If nothing is found, choose Camera > Select Camera (Ctrl+O). The
Detected list shows cameras found on USB. For serial cameras type
the model (it completes as you type) and a port such as
serial:/dev/ttyS0. For a memory card or any folder of pictures use
the model "Directory Browse" and the port disk:/path/to/folder.

On GNOME the desktop may already have claimed the camera; unmount it
in Files first if gPhoto reports the device as busy.

2. The index
------------

Every picture on the camera appears as a numbered thumbnail. The
numbers match the command line. Thumbnails load one at a time in the
background; you can work while they load.

  Click select
  Ctrl+click add to selection
  Shift+click select a range
  Double-click open in the viewer
  Ctrl+A select all
  F5 / Ctrl+R read the index again
  Delete delete selected pictures

The status bar shows the camera and port, information about the
selection and a progress bar during transfers.

3. Saving pictures
------------------

File > Save Pictures (Ctrl+S) saves the selected pictures, or all of
them if none is selected, into a folder you choose. The camera's
file names and time stamps are kept. Save Thumbnails does the same
for thumbnails, prefixing their names with "thumb_".

4. The viewer
-------------

Double-click a picture to download it and open it in a window. The
toolbar rotates, flips and scales it, and zooms between fit-to-window
and actual size. Pictures are shown the right way up using their
EXIF orientation. Save As writes the camera's original bytes if the
picture was not edited; otherwise it encodes JPEG, PNG, TIFF or BMP
according to the file name.

5. Taking pictures, deleting, uploading
---------------------------------------

Camera > Take Picture (Ctrl+T) triggers the shutter and selects the
new picture in the index. Camera > Delete Pictures removes the
selection after asking. File > Upload copies files to the camera.
These actions are greyed out when the camera's driver cannot do
them.

6. Camera settings
------------------

Camera > Configure (Ctrl+,) shows the settings the driver reports,
one tab per section. Only changed values are sent back to the
camera when you press Apply. Camera Summary, Driver Manual and
About the Driver show the texts from libgphoto2.

7. HTML gallery
---------------

File > Publish HTML Gallery saves the selected pictures (or all),
their thumbnails, and an index.html in a folder you choose, then
opens it in the web browser. From the command line:

gphoto --html ~/public_html/trip --title "Trip to Lofoten" -s 1-40
